Woodstock, the most famous small town in America, offers visitors lots of artsy activities as well as cute little shops to explore.

The Center for Photography features work by contemporary photographers and offers workshops and lectures year round. The workshops are run by expert photographers. The center is open Weds-Sun from noon to 5 pm. Admission is free. Courses average $200 to $300.
The Woodstock Artists Association is housed in a downtown historic landmark and showcases the work of area artists. The association, which dates from 1920, also holds artist meet-and-greets, poetry readings and musical performances. The museum is open Friday & Saturday, noon to 6 pm, Sunday, Monday – Thursday, noon to 5 pm. Admission is free ($5 suggested donation). It is closed for the month of Jan.
Woodstock’s eclectic downtown stores offer hours of entertainment. Here are a few of our favourites:
- Candlestock sells hand-crafted beeswax and drip candles. In the back room, there’s a mountainous drip candle that has grown since 1970 into a more than 6-foot mound of coloured wax. Great for gifts.
- The Golden Notebook is a valued independent bookstore. In a town full of writers, artists, musicians the emphasis is on quality literature. They also play host to many book readings.
- Pondicherry sells handicrafts and a selection of yoga props, books, music and videos, and organic cotton and hemp yoga clothing.
- Catskill Art & Supply offers quality art materials, office supplies, greeting cards, novelty gifts, maps and carefully selected accessories as well as services like custom picture framing & graphic design.
